Fix automated Google base file

The XML file automatically generated has spaces before the XML declaration line that causes Google to reject the file. At least this is happening on Windows servers - don't know about Linux or Unix servers.

Are you 'grabbing' the actual XML file from the ShopSite data directory via FTP, or are you just copying and pasting it from the view of it you see in the ShopSite backoffice? If the later, then the extra spaces at the top are just an effect of displaying the XML in the browser, they are not actually in the XML file that ShopSite has generated and sends to Google Base (now Google Merchant Center).

Automated XML file

We are sending the feed via ShopSite's "send feed" button and Google is rejecting it (via FTP to Google).

At that point, we download the file and remove the spaces and then re-submit it to Google. Then Google takes it.

Google error messages

Postby webkare » Tue Oct 06, 2009 12:59 pm

The error messages we get from Google when we try the "send feed" button are as follows:

1. XML tag mismatch
2. Invalid RSS/Atom document format

ShopSite says that the feed has been sent successfully - then we get the above error messages from Google. Then we download the file, remove the beginning spaces and manually upload it to Google and Google is happy.
