iphone version of my Shopsite store

Postby avalonwine » Mon Jun 22, 2009 8:44 am

I'm trying to create an iphone option for my shopsite custom templates- does anyone know if there's an if-then in the custom template code that allows a check of screen width? Or any shopsite template code that looks at the recipient's browser?

Any other ideas for how to create an iphone version without resorting to a new copy of shopsite just for the mobile version? I've already looked at rewriting the templates as pure css but the calls for the data have me stymied. I just can't get my head around how to combine the shopsite custom template requirements with conditional css.

And if I did buy another copy of shopsite for the mobile version, any ideas how I'd access the same database for each version, so I only have to update one set of product info?

Thanks!

You could probably use Javascript to check the browser version, then document.write out an alternate stylesheet depending on the results.

Depending on your template, it may be a little tricky, because Shopsite layout formatting isn't always done with pure CSS.

How much change do you think you want to make to the pages for an iPhone viewer?

Also, do you have any stats to determine how many people are visiting your site with mobile browsers, to see if it's worth the work?

Any Progress with Mobile Template

Postby webpharmacy » Wed Jul 22, 2009 3:54 pm

I have been experimenting with a mobile web template by using mobisitegalore.com but the template for the free site i generated using this was not really suitable

I experimented with a posting a seperate css script for screens and pcs and a separate css script for mobiles so the page rendered in the right dimensions still getting this right - I need to get a reliable mobile to test on.
This did not really work (but may be because i was testing it on a pc) so I am looking at creating my own mobile template (with little success) I am knew to this whole WML WAP code and not sure how to integrate the shopsite tags with the right programming language for phones.

It would be great if shop site rolled out a mobile CSS version of their templates or a template that was the right style for mobile.

Far less than 1% of our traffic uses hand held devices. I suspect that few of those are seriously shopping online. What figures are others here seeing?

I'm not going to devote much effort to such small numbers. Posting a prominent toll free order phone number may be the best way to handle these customers for now. We're happy to accept phone orders.

I personally like the full version websites when using my Iphone. I get to these mobile sites and get frustrated when I can't get to the regular version.

Although Mobile Devices account for approximately 1% of our stores traffic the increased usage in both the iPad and other "Touch" devices and Tablets that are optimized for simple UI's are increasing. It would be great if Shopsite could throw together a really basic mobile template for us to build upon. Maybe even set it up so it creates a page at m.yoursite.com so we don't have to purchase separate stores. Maybe this could be a PRO feature.
