We've been on the Web since 1994 and up to 4/2002, had less than $200 in
credit card fraud. In 4/2002 we were defrauded of a few thousand dollars and
have since tightened up our scrutiny, particularly for shipment to the
(mid-East / far-East). Knowing the IP address is an important additional
piece of information. I'm glad ShopSite 6.1 gives this to us.
I believe VISA and Mastercard must support merchants much more than they do.
Although not guaranteed solutions I believe merchants need to lobby their
credit card payment gateways, clearinghouse and/or VISA and Mastercard for:
1. verification of foreign (non-USA) addresses; Currently all we can get is
the toll telephone number of the foreign bank; I'm not interested in having
someone call a foreign bank, at our expense, in the middle of the night. I
like the American Express system as they have an 800# to call for
verification of addresses anywhere in the world. My believe is that if our
clearinghouse can give us authorization, they should be able to verify
foreign addresses.
2. a feedback method with 800# and/or email for merchants to report probable
/ actual fraudulent use of cards; Because VISA and Mastercard don't have an
easy way of reporting probable / actual fraudulent use of cards, I believe
many merchants don't let them know when they get such an order. The earlier
a CC# is flagged by VISA / Mastercard as being fraudulently used, the
earlier authorizations will be stopped.

Hi,
as we have received just another fraud order (passed to the fraud dept. of
the cc billing company immediately), I was looking again, how to gain more
information about the purchaser.
Updating to 6.1 which shows the IP number as soon as it becomes available
for BSD 4 (there will be a mail through the shopsite mailing list?!) is
one
thing.
The other thing is that I have now installed a product from
www.visualware.com called visualroute. There is a server license (10 user)
for 150 US$ that allows to be installed on a Win/Linux/etc. server and
then
all clients can perform lookups for IPs, hostnames etc. using any java
enable webbrowser. The geographical location of the computer using a
specific IP is shown on a map. (14 days free fully functional trial
version
is available fro download).
This means if we do receive souspicious orders, everybody working the
order
department can at least gain fast information where approx. the person
ordering was located by using the IP number and performing a visual trace.
An american or german credit card for an order originating from Indonesia,
Russia or China is normally a fraud order.
BTW: There is also a single computer license of visualroute for only 39,95
US$.
I though this maybe usefull to other merchants as well.
Best regards,
Niko
