Eliminate shopping cart buttons altogether

I sell a service rather than a tangible product and so I don't need a lot of the buttons on the shopping cart. If somebody is on this page they will want to either continue to checkout or cancel the order. So I neeed only 'empty cart' and 'checkout'.

How can I eliminate all of the rest such as 'recalculate', 'continue shopping' and 'shipping options'?

Sure. Under Commerce Setup -> Shipping just set the shipping option to "None". No shipping options will be presented to the customer.

Now if it's not too much to ask, how can I get rid of all of the other buttons on the shopping cart such as recalculate, continue shopping and that big text area?

Basically I just want potential customers to be able to checkout or empty their basket.

Quick fix: Under Preferences -> Store text -> Shopping Cart set the images for the various buttons to 1x1 spacer images. This will make them "disappear".

Better fix: Use a custom cart template and you can control the layout much easier.

For the text box, you can disable this by unchecking the option "Create an ordering instructions box:" under Commerce Setup -> Order System -> Shopping Cart
