shipping for a gift

Postby Bill Werle » Fri Jul 12, 2002 12:27 pm

Hello,

One of our Shopsite's will let a customer add a little lapel pin for
free to their order if the order is over a certain amount. The dilemma
is the lapel pin is $3.00 if ordered alone with an additional shipping
charge. They don't want to charge the customer shipping when the pin is
added on as a gift.

I can see how to not charge shipping by using the shipping by weight
option but is there a way to tell shopsite not to charge shipping based
on certain criteria?

Thanks,

Bill,

I can think of two ways to do this in ShopSite Pro:

via the Discount feature:
Make a Discount range that begins at the amount they want to force
before they get the lapel pin free, and the upper limit of the Discount is
some huge amount. Then make the discount be $3.00. You can even change the
text for the word Discount to be 'Free Gift' or something like that.
Disadvantage: you can't use the Discount feature for anything else at the
same time, and the shopper will get the $3.00 discount whether or not they
have placed the lapel pin product in the cart.

via the Coupon feature:
Make a coupon for the lapel pin. Have it only apply to orders over that
certain dollar amount. You can either have the coupon BE the free product
(i.e., all they have to do is enter the coupon in and they will receive the
lapel pin), or you can have them add the lapel pin Product (which is $3.00)
then add the Coupon (which only applies when the lapel pin Product is in
the cart) to get $3.00 off. Disadvantage: none

Of course both of these have the disadvantage that whether or not the
coupon or discount is applied it still does not exempt the product from
shipping charges, so you can either turn off shipping charges for the lapel
pin product, or try to calculate what the shipping charge for that product
might be and add that price to the amount being deducted by te
coupon/discount feature. This is not an issue if you are using a coupon to
represent the actual free product, since coupons don't have weight and by
nature don't have a shipping charge.

We send a free gift (a screwdriver) with every order but always as a
surprise. Would there be an automatic way to add it to the shopping
cart so that it appears on the invoice as a free gift.

I can't think of an automatic way, but making a coupon named "Free
Screwdriver" and putting the link on the shopping cart screen might
work.
