Product Give-away as a Discount

We are wanting to run a special where if a customer orders a certain dollar amount or more, they receive a free product. We do not want them to have to do anything like entering a coupon code, etc. We want the qualifier to happen automatically and also be listed as an item to be included at no charge.
How can I make this happen?

There is no feature to allow a free product based on the dollar amount of an order. The closes thing is the reward program which will allow a free product based on the purchase of other products.

If you require your shoppers to register or sign in then you could assign a coupon to a group that the customers is assigned to and have the coupon automatically added to the cart when they signin. The coupon would need to be for the specific product and dollar value of that product in order for them to get it free. The product cannot, however, be automatically added to the cart, the shopper would still need to add it.

Any chance this kind of feature will be added in the near future. Seems as though many users might be able to take advantage of it.
