Are there still bugs in Shopsite 9.0?

Postby hiamps » Thu Sep 04, 2008 4:39 pm

I am asking this because I asked my host, Hostcentric when they would update from 8.3 and here was the responce...

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Support.

The current version of the ShopSite in your account is 8.3. You can check the version of the ShopSite in your account by referring the link at:
http://members.hostcentric.com/webContr ... opSite.bml . As we are on shared hosting architecture, it isn't possible to upgrade the version as soon it available in the market. We need to first check its compatibility then we can upgrade the version. We will e-mail our users when the new version is available.

If you have any further questions, please update the Support Console.

Sincerely,

Stuart Thomas

Your question "Are there still bugs in Shopsite 9.0?" is a pretty broad question. I have worked in software quality assurance for over 20 years at various software companies and I have yet to see ANY software product that doesn't have bugs in it. I find bugs in just about any application that I install on my computer if I look hard enough. The question should be "Do the bugs make it so the product is unusable?"

The latest version of ShopSite is 9.0.4 and is quite stable. ShopSite 9.0 was release in October last year so it has been field tested for at least 10 months. There have been four update releases that fix bugs (or functionality) that were causing problems for some (not all) merchants. There are thousands of merchants using it now. I won't say that it is bug free but any bugs that might remain aren't causing any major problems for the vast majority of merchants or they wouldn't be using it.

However, when a hosting company is dealing with tens of thousands of stores, most of which are running in a shared environment, where upgrading a single store requires upgrading thousands of stores they are reluctant to make any changes. If they install a new version on thousands of stores and some people don't like something about the new version they may get lots of support calls. So they would rather not rock the boat and leave things as they are. Other hosting companies either install each store individually or in small groups sharing a single install so it is easier to upgrade a single store or at least just affect a few stores.
