Javascript on Dropdown boxes

The dropdown boxes that shopsite creates are named "10:finopt:0". I need to perform a javascript function that uses the value selected in the dropdown. How do I get the value from the dropdown javascript does not like 10:finopt:0.value or "10:finopt:0".value?

I figured it out by using document.forms["f1"]["10:finopt:0"].value
