Postby codeelectrical » Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:18 pm

Is it a good idea to have animation gifs on my website? ive heard that there are pros and cons to having them on your site.

Thanks!

What were you going to use one for? Most times, these days, they just look cheesy in my opinion. But maybe there's a legitimate use that I'm not thinking of right now... I usually see animation/rotating pictures etc done with Flash instead. But if it's subtle, and looks like Flash, but is an animated gif instead, then I guess it could be okay.

This is just my opinion, from a design perspective. I can't think of a technical reason not to use them.

Our company was thinking about putting an arrow hitting a target on our home page of our website. Our company is part of the electrical industry. I have heard from some people that animation on webpages are used as a distraction but others say that its a good idea because it will get the viewer to come back and visit more often and not get bored.

My own personal preference would be a no, but that's just me. I haven't looked at website standards or preferences within the electrical industry. I like to use www.coolhomepages.com to help stay on top of what websites are looking like these days... Although a lot of those may be more artsy than what most corporations really need or want... I work in healthcare though - and we stick to pretty bland designs - it's all about trust and respectability there. good luck.
