Google Sitemap Wizard

Postby luciano991 » Tue Jan 01, 2008 12:46 pm

The Google Sitemap Wizard asks for a file created when you verify your site with Google. When I verified my site, I got a meta tag to copy into the HTML of my site pages and Shopsite Templates. So, now how do I get the file that the Shopsite Wizard is looking for since my site is already verified and I cannot follow the directions for completing the wizard?

thanks,

Mark

You can 'unverify' your site by removing the meta tag that Google told you to put in your pages, then log into your Google Webmaster Tools account and look at some of the statistics for your site, etc, etc. They will re-check for your meta tag then or sometime thereafter (so you may need to wait a day or so), and your site will appear as unverified, so you can then go through the verification process again and choose the file method instead of the meta tag method.

Or don't even worry about it and just put SOMETHING in the wizard field for the filename. So what if ShopSite creates the 'wrong' filename for verification. It shouldn't matter, as long as your site stays verified via your verification meta tags.

Loren,

Thanks so much for your reply. I will keep these strategies in mind for the future.

In the meantime, I went to this URL: http://www.auditmypc.com/free-sitemap-generator.asp and found a wonderful free tool for generating Google Sitemaps. In fact, these sitemap files can be used anywhere. There's a 30 second video on the page that tells how to do it. All you need is Java and the rest is fantastic. You create your sitemap file and upload it to Google and that's it. Furthermore it makes a sitemap of your entire website and not just the Shopsite part. I highly recommend it.

All the best in the new year,

Mark
