This kind of process seems as if it won't work for us, because we use an
outside fulfillment company which has its own back-end system that orders
get loaded into.
We can modify orders there, but then would have to go back into some other
system (right now it's just Yahoo Store, but I suppose it could be
Authorize.net or something? I've never used those systems) to modify the
charge amount and do the charge.
We also need it to all work online, not on any dedicated PC.
I'm wondering if this inability to modify orders makes Shopsite unusable
for
us or not.

The orders are downloaded from ShopSite and from that point all order
handling is done outside of ShopSite. Orders can not be uploaded back
into ShopSite after modifications are made to them.

If orders can't be modified in Shopsite, how could an external program
let
you modify them?
Or does it just delete an order and automatically create a new one with
the
requested changes?

ShopSite does all the front-end tasks excellently (like creating pages
and products, shopping cart, etc.) but has very limited features as
far
as order processing go.
What we do is use Stone Edge Order Manager which downloads ShopSite's
orders and offers a TON of customer and order processing functions
including custom email templates (for as many different situations as
you need), backordering and drop-shipping, custom pick lists and
invoices for print, and more.
www.stoneedge.comIt'd definately worth it and had much more functionality than any
online
system I've seen.

I was looking in the FAQ files and it said that orders cannot be
modified in
Shopsite.
Is this true? What do you do when a customer wants to change the
shipping
method or change their order?
Most things in Shopsite look good so far, but not being able to
modify
orders would be a problem!
