My company has been using shopsite for our ecommerce for the last 3 years
with great success. However, we are now forced to change our website privacy
policy so that it is compliant with the new California privacy laws.

We do not track any info on our customers other than what is recorded at
check out. Our new privacy policy is very specific about what information is
recorded and how it is used. The only gray area left to cover is what
happens in the shopping cart and check out process? Aside from information
the customer manually inputs, what does Shopsite collect and how is this
done. Could someone detail this process a bit more for me?

Not sure what you mean here, but I will try. When a shopper places an
item in the shopping cart, a cookie is created with a random number in
it that identifies the shopper with their shopping cart. If a cookie are
disabled in the shopper's browser (although the largest percentage of
internet users leave cookies enabled in their browser), then the
shopper's IP address identifies them with their cart.

When the shopper finalizes an order, their information is stored
encrypted in ShopSite's order databases. If you have a real-time payment
gateway configured in ShopSite, then the credit card information is also
sent via an encrypted SSL connection to the payment gateway for
verification/processing of the credit card. A cookie will also be set
(again, only if cookies are enabled) for the shopper containing the
address information they entered (no payment information is set in a
cookie, of course) for convenience so that the next time they shop at
your store they don't have to type all of the information again.

I was aware that certain cart information would be retained for whatever
period the ShopSite owner/user sets it at (seven days in our case) for
non-finalized carts and that if they register, their address info will be
retained longer, but your statement indicates that this information will be
retained even on finalized carts for non-registered customers. Please
confirm this is what you mean.
