Orders not saving in customer profile

Postby Nikolaus Gruchot » Thu Mar 25, 2004 1:23 pm

Hi all,

I have placed the following test orders in our shop (I was signed in as
customer during each order)

Order 1 using generic payment option 2
-> Order was saved in the customer profile
-> Delivery address was saved in the customer profile
-> Payment information was NOT saved in the customer profile (which is
normal according to Jim)

Order 2 using generic payment option 1
-> Order was NOT saved in the customer profile
-> Delivery address was NOT saved in the customer profile
-> Payment information was not saved in the customer profile (which is
normal according to Jim)

Order 3 using VISA
-> Order was saved in the customer profile
-> Delivery address was saved in the customer profile
-> Payment information was saved in the customer profile

Order 4 using C.O.D.
-> Order was NOT saved in the customer profile
-> Delivery address was NOT saved in the customer profile
-> Payment information was NOT saved in the customer profile

I do not think that this behaviour is normal/intended?! Has anybody tested
the CR feature and all payment options with their own shop and can provide
some feedback?!

Thank you,

Niko

Niko,

Both billing and shipping addresses are saved when I have checked the
option to save billing information and I use either COD or a credit
card. When I use one of the generic options just the shipping
information is saved in my profile. Are you sure you had the option of
saving the billing information set under Preferences when you view your
customer profile?

Hi Jim,

I am pretty much sure having (x) YES. I want to save my billing information.
in my customer profile when placing my orders. I will rerun my test orders
and report.

Say, what is the reasoning behind the fact that generic payments are not
saved in the customer profile? I am especially interested in this, because
we use one of the generic payment options for bank draft, which is more
widely used for payment then credit cards in Germany. The customer provides
us with 1. The account name 2. The account number 3. The bank code and 4.
The bank name. We deliver the order and charge the bank account of the
customer the same day. If I cannot have this information saved in the
customer profile, I am putting off about 50% of our customers who use this
type of payment (most of them does not have a cc!).

Regards,
Niko

I'm not sure why only CC and COD were included in the payment
information to be saved. An enhancement request has been entered to add
the others.

Do you require shoppers to register? If not what percent of them
register and of that number how many want their payment information kept?

Good evening Jim,

so far I had the customer registration feature only switched on for
translating and testing puposes. Nevertheless some customer were registering
during the "on air" time :-)

I would never require customers to register. I have spent the last years
(and especially the last days with Shopsite 7.x) to streamline the wording
an screen design in the shopping cart, check out page etc., to make the
ordering process as smooth and as comprehensible as possible. As we are
receiving an increasing amount of orders from people who are new to the
internet, I think that we have suceeded.

A required cr would break the flow of the shopping process and prevent
orders from "just happening" in my opinion.

We are online since 4 years now and gain online about 1000 new customers /
year. About 20% place a second order online within the same year and
additional 10-15% place a second order with 48 months.

I would think that about every 4-5th customer will sooner or later register.
This makes some 200-250 people / year. From my experience with our customers
I would guess that most of the people registering would NOT save their cc
information, but would rather use the bank draft option and save this
information in the cr. Bank draft is about the safest payment method a
customer can choose in Germany, as every charge to the customers bank
account can be reversed by the customer with a mouse click for about 4-6
weeks after the charge. It is also good payment option for us, especially
for smaller orders as there is no 3-4% charge involved.

I have finished the translation, the graphics and the changes in the cr
template, but there is no way that I can switch it on, until also the
generic payment information is saved. The customers would simply not
understand why their info is not saving and start calling us. If on the
other hand, I put an explanation in the cr screens that only half the
payment methods do save due to shortcomings in the programming, this would
look not very professional and trustworthy. I would personally not leave
_any_ payment information in such a shop.

So its there and ready to go, but not really usable for us at this stage.

Regards,

Niko

P.S: I will re-run my test orders tomorrow night after business hours and
report back.

Hi Jim,

I have just placed another test order in our shop.

1. Turned on the cr feature in the back office
2. Put an article in the shopping cart
3. signed in using my account information and made sure that [X] YES. Save
payment information is checked
4. Choosed "New ship to"
5. Choosed "New payment"
6. Choosed payment COD
7. In the shopping cart I have entered a new invoice address and a separate
new shipping address.
8. Confirmed and submitted the order.
9. Went back to the shop, into the shopping cart
10. Signed in again and clicked on "view/edit account

-> The order itself was NOT saved
-> The delivery address was NOT saved
-> The payment information/invoice address was NOT saved

At this stage I would say that there is something wrong with our
installation. Loren did upgrade us with purchased direct support about 10
days ago from 6.x to 7.0.3, I think I need to contact her and see if she has
an idea what's wrong :-(

Niko

Hi Niko,
First item - Loren is a man. ;-)

Second Item. I tried the steps you indicated and all my information is
kept. I don't know what would be different on your store than on mine.
Maybe there is a translation issue that is affecting something. If
Loren still has the login information for your store he can probably
check and see what is causing the problem. I'll try to help him with
the german if he can't figure out what something says but it has been
30+ years since I spoke much german. I spent 18 months in the area
around Kassel, Frankfurt and Ludwigshafen and was pretty good at
speaking in german but you forget a lot when you don't use it every day.

Hi Jim,

You have just shattered a 4 year long dream ;-))

Anyhow, I have set the login information for the shop back to the parameters
that Loren had for updating the shop.

You know how to switch on the cr feature and can do so in our shop for
testing purposes if you like whenever you like. Let me know what you find
out.

If you want to place test orders, please order
http://www.danshop.com/suuv5842.html, this is the cheapest article in our
shop, so our statistics will only deviate marginally from reality.

Oh, if you want some more practice in german, we could run a german edition
of shopsite and you take over the german support forum :-) Funny enough, we
had a company from Germany calling us yesterday. They liked our online shop
so much that they wanted to know what system we are using and how to get it.
We gave them the shopsite homepage URL and pointed them in the right
direction...

Best regards,

Niko
