Shipping by weight needs update by mid April 2004 please

Hi all,

as I have already mentioned in a posting here last year, there is (at least
from our side) a big need for the "simple shipping by weight" to be upgraded
in a way, that allows us to enter more then the currently existing 10
columns. We are based in Germany and are working with a EU parcel service
that covers all EU countries and with German Post/DHL for non-EU countries.

Currently some of the countries we ship to, have the same shipping rates and
we can group them, but we have already non-EU countries we cannot squeeze
into the 10 columns scheme and where the customers need to email us in order
to place an order.

We need to have at least 30 columns in the shipping by weight feature.
Better, if the number of columns (for us countries) could be user defined in
the shopsite back-office.

There is no way to cover the variety of shipping costs with something like
flat shipping, as the costs range from some EUR 5,00 to more then 79,00 EUR
per package.

Here is what I am talking about:

EU countries:
----------------
1. Austria
2. Belgium
3. Denmark
4. Finland
5. France
6. Germany
7. Greece
8. Italy
9. Ireland
10. Luxemburg
11. Netherlands
12. Portugal
13. Spain
14. Sweden
15. United Kingdom

Non-EU countries we do ship to as well:
-------------------------------------------------
16. Australia
17. Canada
18. Liechtenstein
19. Norway
20. Switzerland
21. USA

New EU countries (inner-EU shipping, no export paperwork needed anymore)
from 1. May 2004:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
22. Estonia (1,37 Mio. people)
23. Latvia (2,37 Mio. people)
24. Lithuania (3,7 Mio. people)
25. Malta (390000 people)
26. Poland (38,65 Mio. people)
27. Slovakia (5,4 Mio. people)
28. Slovenia (1,99 Mio. people)
29. Czech Rep. (10,3 Mio. people)
30. Hungary (10 Mio. people)
31. Zypern (728000 people)

Thank you for looking into this and implementing it in a 7.x update!

Best regards from Germany,

Niko

Niko,

Sounds like this scenario is a good candidate for a Custom Shipping
Add-on module. The advantages of an add-on are that even in your current
version your module could refer to your own custom shipping tables which
could be as large as you want them. An additional benefit could be that
using a custom module program can require the shopper to indicate which
country they are shipping to, and your custom module could use that to
determine what shipping options and calculations to display for that
specific shopper rather than rely on them to choose the correct one from
a long list of all countries' options.

Hi Loren,

thanx for this feedback. Now: If this is the way to go. Where to I get the
person writing me this add-on module?

All I really need is the way I have described it below and it is integrated
by shopsite already. Simple shipping by weight but with about 30 columns
instead of 10 (shopsite max.).

We have only one shipping method and price per country which is determined
by the weight of the package.

Niko

P.S: We are heading today for the BOOT, an international watersports show,
to exhibit there, answers to this post with cc as pm would be appreciated. I
will only be able to pcik up the thread in about 14 days. Thanx.
