E Gift Certificates

It may seem late...we've been mailing hard gift certificates but
some customers want emailed gift certificates. Any software or
program recommendations?

If you email gift certificates how will you be able to insure that people
don't reuse them? Printing a $20 gift certificate over and over is no
different than counterfeiting $20 bills (except that the FBI probably won't
come after you.) Unless someone has a way to insure that an emailed gift
certificate can be used once and only once this won't work. Chances are
that this will have a heavy dependency on the individual merchant in
question. If they have a computerized Point of Sale (POS) system that can
check gift certificate serial numbers when someone checks out then maybe it
can work. But I'm betting that most merchants aren't that sophisticated.

If you don't have a giant numbers of certificates, I would try using the
coupon feature. According to documentation a coupon can be given an
expiration until 2038. I would work up a simple tracking form with the
certificate (coupon) number. When it is used note the order number on
the form and delete the certificate (coupon) from the system. If a
question comes up you know exactly when it was used.

We (www.audiobooksonline.com) have been emailing gift certificates for a few
years now. We assign the gift certificate the same number as the ShopSite
order number that it was ordered on. The instructions in our email gift
certificate tells the recipient to reference this gift certificate number
when they place their order. The recipient's order, if they place their
order online, gets assigned a new ShopSite order number, therefore there is
no confusion. Once a gift certificate amount gets used up, it can't be used
any more.

This has worked well for us.

We too assign the ShopSite number, StoneEdge Order Manager
number, and the date
on the certificate so it's easy to track. As a subsequent
question, what format do you use to email the gift
certificate...do you have something pretty or just a simple email
message? I prefer pretty.

We currently send a plain text email gift certificate. Perhaps a "pretty"
one in the future.
