I removed add to cart button for items we not longer have in stock - however
I notice that although the graphic is removed on the store page when
customers use the search
facility a x appears as though the graphic is missing and the customer can
still order via this broken link.

Any ideas were I can remove the add to cart from the search results?

Hi Paul,

in the product layout screen, for "Add to Cart Button:" select "text" and
enter one space in the text field. This works for us (shopsite pro 6.0.3)
