I use the BlueHornet solution for a few of my clients.
It uses an order.api to collect data needed for your email database upon
checkout so all the customer needs to do is check the box. Plus it has a
very customizable interface for the people who are just browsing your site
and want to request more info.

I use Postmaster General and it works great (www.postmastergeneral.com). My
list is around 13,000 names and sending regular or HTML e-mail is simple.
It uses HTML code to sign up or remove themselves from your website. Every
a-mail you send through them includes the ability to remove the customer
automatically. I pay $199 per month, well worth it.

We're using BlueHornet as well - great tracking features at a reasonable
price. Best HTML/Rich text editor I've seen.
