Shopsite and performance.

Hello. Wondering about speed, Linux and ShopSite.
I'm runing a ShopSite Pro 6.0.3 on an IBM server with RedHat 7.3.
I used to run this om Windows, but the fact that the MS platform is slow in
the making for ShopSite, I chose to try linux for mye first time.
The server is a Netfiity 3500M20 with 2 x 733MHz CPU's. It has 384MBs of
RAM.
The server runs Bind 9 with about 80 domains and ShopSite.
The ShopSite store is quite limited when it comes to the number of customers
and is password protected.
The low traffic is one of the reasons why we host it her localy. The rest of
our stores are hosted externaly.
I seem that the ShopSite backend is a bit slow. I have (with my limited
linux background) checked the system while doing an impost and publish
operation.
There are about 500 pages and 1000 products.
I used "top" in linux and I can see the .cgi's apearing in "top".
It moves quite fine betwean pages in the store and in ShopSite. But a largar
opperation like using power edit on all products to change the template and
runing publish to publish the hole store takes some time. The speed warrys.
When it uses about 100% CPU i works fine and looks the same - when i work
with our other stores (some about the same size). But then the .cgi in
question uses perhaps 1 % or less, and the computer has about 100% free CPU
resources.
I can't see that the server is straining it self. That's the problem.
The Bind is for holding som domains we don't use activly and has almost no
work at all.
I can see the network and harddriv lights and the activity is almost none
when the cpuload of .cgi i question falls low.
If anyone was able to follow this ( probably not ), what I want is for the
server to use it's resources to it's fullest.
Any idea of what the problem is ? or what I can check for ?
Any optimizin tricks for linux/shopsite/apache ?
Is it right that apache 1.32.3 doesen't utilize SMP ?
Wil ShopSite work on vs 2 of apache ?
Thanks in advance, and excuse my lack of writing skills.
