How can I insert some java script into the <head> </head> area?

Don,
Put it in the Meta Description field. You will need to terminate the
description field with "> and then put in your script code. After the
script code you will need to put in some code to handle the closing ">
that ShopSite automatically appends. You can use something like <meta
name="description" content="

so the content of the Meta Description field would be like this

This is meta description text">
<Script .....>
Script text is here ....
</Script >
<meta name="description" content="

Remember also that java script doesn't _always_ need to be in the header
section. I've put most of the java script for navigating our site into
the Preferences -> Page Header & Footer -> Header text area and it works
fine. This lets me maintain the java script in one site-wide location
rather than having to make changes on each and every page.
