Referrer URL Tracking ?

Postby A Stewart » Thu Oct 25, 2001 9:40 am

Hi

Is it possible to get Shopsite Pro to store the URL of the website
that referred traffic to our site. We would like that URL to be
downloaded in the CSV file along with the orders.

Yes it is. Essentially you use the Associate function. Enter the
website as if you were adding it as an associate. Then you will give
either all or part of the code as below.

1) If you are putting the banner or text link on a site and it wants
you to give them the full link.

You will give the link to the site in the same manner as if you were
giving them an Associate link. Just tell them that the link is used to
track your orders instead of calling it an associate link. Place the
text that you want to appear on the site or a link to your graphic that
you want to appear on the site in the code where requested by ShopSite.

<a
href="http://www.1ob.com/cgi-bin/ShopSite/sb/ref.cgi?name=GOTO&storeid=usr365">

[Your link text or graphic goes here]
</a>

2) If the site that you are giving the code to generates its own link
and it just needs the URL to link to:
Give only the URL as shown between **.

<a href="
**http://www.1ob.com/cgi-bin/ShopSite/sb/ref.cgi?name=GOTO&storeid=usr365**

">[Your link text or graphic goes here]</a>

Basically when an order comes in from the site, the site will be listed
under the Associate column on the order. With a little more effort,
this concept can be used to track keywords on pay sites such as GOTO,
now Overture. Just create multiple links such as GOTOA, GOTOB, etc. and
keep track which code goes with which keyword on Overture. When orders
come in, you can track which keywords are bringing in the most money.
The downside is that increasingly major sites want an exact link as they
mistake the above for redirection code or something that they don't
like.
