Hi,

I have 5 Widgets on-hand. A customer wants to purchase 8 Widgets. I
just learned that ShopSite allows her to purchase the 8 Widgets. Then,
I have the task (*groan*) of telling her that we have only 5 Widgets to
sell her and that she will have to wait until we receive the remaining 3
Widgets from the supplier.

Is this a bug or limitation of ShopSite? Or should I have to set my
out-of-stock level higher?

To achieve wedded bliss, you first must plan for it.

It's a limitation, and one reason the feature is called 'Tracking'
instead of 'Control' (note that there wasn't even this in pre-5.0
versions).

If the shopper raises the quantity over the limit once the item is in
the shopping cart the order can go through. They can also place the same
item in the cart as many times as they want. The inventory is not
decremented until the order is completed. Following attempts to order
the item will NOT be successful. Also, if there is one widget left,
multiple shoppers can have that widget in their cart and once it is in
their cart they can checkout with it.

The total control paradigm is quite a bit more complicated, especially
in an internet store where statistically only about 50% (or less) of
people who place items into an online cart actually complete the order.
The next version of the Inventory Tracking feature in the upcoming
ShopSite version has been improved to resolve some of these issues, but
I am sure it won't satisfy everyone or every possible contingency yet.
