Don,
No one is jumping on this so let me give you my experience from a merchant's
point of view.
As you can see at
http://www.switchhits.com/art_nouveauis ... lates.htmleach item has 3 options. On the size option, they have a choice of sizes
defaulted to a certain size. On the other 2 options, they are requested to
"Select" a various option as the default on the pull down menu. Most people
are smart and choose appropriately. However, regularly, customers do not
make the proper selection or no selection on one or two of the choices.
This usually happens when they are ordering multiple items and I think the
routine gets stale. That entails either an email from the customer when
they get their order confirmation or I will follow-up with an email
requesting them to choose an option when I get an order for a Single toggle
Select Top Plate over Black. Luckily, with the aid of Stone Edge Order
Manager (
www.stoneedge.com), it's easy to make any necessary changes for
inventory, billing, invoices, etc.
So no matter how you set it up, it's not foolproof when dealing with the
public...especially new computer users. It can also cause customer service
tact (or stubbornness) when customers insist they ordered one thing and they
receive something else.
This is one limitation with ShopSite that I hope can get changed in an
upcoming release. In my previous 2 sites with 2 other software products,
each option pull down menu would have its own Ordering Options
Description -- not possible with SS5.01 currently. Above each option it
would read "Please Select Size" and "Please Select Top Plate" and "Please
Select Bottom Plate" and the Pull Down Menus would be defaulted to a
particular size or color. With SS5.01, you only get one Ordering Options
Description which probably would not make sense for 3 different options.
All the information about setting up options and pricing is in the help menu
at the SS backend. Good luck.

Is there a way when using option lists to "cause" the customer to make a
decision. Say there are 3 flavors and you would like them to choose one of
them. I am using shopsite 5.01 and linux.
