Deleting Old Orders

Postby Switch Hits » Tue Aug 14, 2001 7:23 am

I'm just a dumb merchant using SS 5.0 along with Stone Edge Order Manger who
is afraid to move forward on what is probably an obvious regular chore --
deleting old orders from the ShopSite backend. I'm curious what systems
other merchants have in place as orders accumulate and the downloads become
longer.

Of course, all orders need to be saved somewhere somehow. If the orders are
in Order Manager and it is backed up regularly, can I just delete old orders
from SS? And if I delete orders from SS and I ever need to restore a
backup...well, doesn't that present a problem?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Jimmy,

Usually, once you have all of the customer's information in another database
and the order has been processed, there is no need to keep it in the system.
We print out two copies of each order, as well - one to work with and write
on, and the other we keep in a folder for a month or two to be able to refer
to in case an order is ever lost. We shred these periodically, as they do
tend to build up.

As long as you're using the stone edge order manager, you should be fine.
There is no need to keep these orders in the database. You'll also free up
a lot of space!

Good luck,

Katrina

I agree with Katrina. As long as you have the data in the Order Manager, AND
as long as you are backing up your Order Manager data regularly (you are
doing that, aren't you? preferably on CD's?) you should be safe.

The Order Manager also archives all of the text files that you import, so
that gives you one more safety feature. If you keep those files, you could
always create a new Order Manager store and re-import all of your orders
from those text files.
