Inventory on Option Level

This was discussed before but I wonder if anyone found a workaround for
the missing inventory-tracking-on-option-level feature? I know Barney
has a great solution with the Porduct Manager, but I'd rather keep this
process on the server-side; once the customer ordered a product that's
OOS, it's too much of a hassle to contact the customer to change the
order.
