web analytics and tagging for site success

Postby ross jenkins » Sun Mar 14, 2004 8:45 am

Question, has anyone in this forum been able to figure out how to set up web
analytics on Shop Site? Typically this is done by sprinkling a series of
small lines of javascript and setting variables to capture small details
about a page, i.e color, product type, quantity, etc.

Unfortunately, it looks to me like javascript can not be added to Shop Site
in terms of the CART, so what essentially happens is that after the customer
selects the product page, the analysis is over. My tools can not 'SEE' the
buying process. I can't even 'see' the selection of an 'add to cart' link,
this in of itself would be helpful.

The strength of web analysis is in form abadonment, funnel analysis,
scenario design and conversion tracking, but Shop Site essentially stops the
smart business person from utilizing this. When your average conversion
rates on your site hit 3 and 4%, most folks are lucky. The sad truth is that
is simply an exclamation on the vanilla performance of your web site. Is
anyone interested in the other 97 percent of the business you are missing??

Anyone have suggestions??

Not so.

You can add HTML, JavaScript, etc to the shopping cart screens via the
text fields in Commerce Setup -> Order System (in v7 there will be
separate submenu's here for each screen), for example 'Text at the top
of the shopping cart screen', and 'Text at the bottom of the shopping
cart screen'.

As far as getting variables from an order into your JavaScript code on a
cart screens, ShopSite Pro v7 sets up the basic information about the
order in JavaScript variables in the head section of each shopping cart
screen, so you can insert these variables into your JavaScript that you
have placed on these screens via the fields mentioned in the paragraph
above.

Prior to ShopSite v7, you can do the same type of thing, at least for
the thankyou receipt screen by writing a custom program for the Order
API feature that will write JavaScript variables containing the order
information you need at the top of the thankyou receipt screen.
