Coupons and Free Shipping that Should Be Charged

Postby Lisa Slavik » Wed Feb 04, 2004 8:23 am

I posted a bit ago about this and I really need some suggestions...I was
hoping that SS7 would be the cure all but I just finished going through it
and can't figure out how to manipulate it.

When a customer uses a coupon and it brings the total below my Free Shipping
of 75.00 SS does not charge the customer Shipping when it should. I offer
free shipping on all US orders OVER 75.00.

Example: Customer buys a bottle of perfume for 79.00, uses a 10% coupon
bringing the total to 71.10 and that's it...that is their new total. I need
SS to add the 5.35 shipping to that new subtotal to bring it up to 76.45.
Can this be done or do I need to add a disclaimer to the cart explaining
that my shopping cart cannot calculate the new shipping and we will do it
for them manually. I've been getting a great deal of email regarding this
from customers who end up getting charged the freight when their invoice
clearly states that they should not.

ShopSite is using the "Product Total" (before coupons) to calculate if the
minumum amount has been met to meet the Free Shipping criteria. An
enhancement has been logged to allow the option to apply the minimum to the
SubTotal instead of the Product Total.

Until the enhancement is implemented your options are to 1) create a custom
shipping module using the Shipping API, 2) set the minimum value higher so
that in most cases you are not losing when you offer free shipping, 3)
Modify the Free Shipping option label to say "Free Shipping for Sub Totals
over $75", then at least you can argue that they did not meet the
qualifications.

Note that a number of shoppers would expect a free shipping minimum to apply
to the product total and not to some sub-total so even when you have this
feature you may find out that you still will have unhappy customers since
they thought they met the minium with the product total.
