Gift Certificate

I did a search of "gift certificates" in this newsgroup and it looks like
nothing has been discussed for ages. We've seen some implementations using
the existing coupons feature but it's clearly not elegant and can confuse
both the purchaser and recipient.
Any elegant solutions out there that work nicely with shopsite.
