Deleted product still showing up

Postby Wendy Gordon » Tue Sep 09, 2003 4:32 pm

I've deleted a product that I no longer sell. I published the site. The
product no longer shows up on any pages it was previously on but if you
enter a keyword into the search the product shows up with a link to it's
more info page. If I try looking for the product in the back end of shop
site it says there is no such product.

How do I get rid of this pesky product for good?

Wendy,

Go to Utilities -> Publish, macke sure that the 'Index for Search'
checkbox is checked, and then hit the Regenerate button, which should
regenerate the search indexes and all of the store pages.

We always remove the buy now and checkout from the product while still
associated with a page (you don't want customers buying from the more
information page). Next publish the site. Remove the product from the
associated page and publish site. We also noticed Shopsite will not update
the more information page if the product is not associated with page .

All of our more information pages are indexed with many search engines and
keeping the more information page active with no buy now capability ensures
no 404 error messages (page not found) which cause the page to be removed
from search engine at some point.

I hope this helps a little.
Kind Regards,
ABR

We (Audiobooks Online) have many titles which go out of publication. Rather
than delete the title's More Information page, we (like ABR below) remove
the [Purchase Audiobook] text button so it can't be ordered and we change
the price to $0. Even though a title is not available any longer, its page
remains indexed by the Search Engines. Keeping the page allows us an
opportunity to welcome the visitor to our Web store in hopes that they will
explore our site.

If possible, delete all old more info pages.

This will cause a problem like Larry says because you will get a 404 page
error.

Contact your ISP and create a custom 404 page with search features on it and
a message that explains that the page is no longer available. Most large
sites have custom 404 pages and they are great because some pages that
search engine remember may be years old and no longer on the site.

In my opinion "do not" delete any pages on your site once indexed with SE
(because you could be getting traffic from the page) due to potential
visitors could find something else of interest on your site. Deleting any
page indexed with search engine will be removed the next time the
robot/spider visit the deleted page.

404 Page
Create a special page or duplicate your home page and upload to your root
directory. If you only have Shopsite as entire site upload to store
directory. Regardless of the store setup name the page 404.html

When you leave old more info page on your site you can have a major customer
service problem. Customers visit these pages looking to buy merchandise and
it is not available. I am not sure that this is a big advantage. Major
retailers remove pages when products are not available. I would tend to
follow the leaders.

We leave "out-of-publication" audiobook title pages on our site. I believe
letting visitors know that something is out-of-publication IS part of
customer service. Once a visitor lands on an out-of-publication title's
page, hopefully they will want to explore our site.

Amazon keeps out-of-publication title's pages active and uses the page as an
opportunity to sell used product.

I guess I can understand your position with books. If you maintain the
information in Shopsite you can still maintain control of the more info
pages. One the item is removed from Shopsite, you would have no idea of
what pages are floating on the web. As a customer, if I see a find a
product via a web search and want to buy it and the result is a error, I
don't think I would be interested in another item.

When an item is deleted from Shopsite, I remove the page and since I have
custom 404 pages, the customer has an opportunity to search for another
similar item. Since I have changed to this method, the complaints about old
items found via search has stopped. I too have old pages from old servers
(index etc. not products) that I want to have redirected to my site so I
have created the path on my server and use a redirect page. These old pages
have great location in searches and are very important to my business

I guess to each is own.
