Prevent Orders Temporarily

I have a site in place and we are finalizing the checkout process. Today we received an order I had to refund because the site is actually live. Is there a way to temporarily block orders from completing so we can avoid this?

The only way to prevent orders from being places is to remove the authorization file for the store. However, that will also make it so that nothing else can be done in the store either since the store will not work without that file. Another thing that you might try is to remove all payment methods but unchecking all options on the Commerce Setup > Payment Setup screen.
