Optimizing and Naming

Postby Paula » Fri Mar 30, 2012 1:45 am

A few questions:

1. I don't see where we optimize pages and products pages for search. I see when you enter a title in Shopsite, it appears between the <title> tags when you do "View source." But where do we enter the information that appears between the <description> and <keywords> tags?

2. I notice under the <title> tags some pages show <title>name of page | Page 1 of 1</title>
Is there a way to get rid of the Page 1 of 1? I assume these are because they are secondary pages?

3. How do we get a more descriptive title to appear in the browser? I currently have /page23, etc. and would like something more descriptive for the search engines to pick up.

Thanks.

Information that goes in the <head> section of the html source can be entered on the Pages > Edit Page Content >Advanced Info section. The meta key words and meta description are the fields you probably want to use. The title on pages, that displays in the browser at the top of the window, will usually be the page name with any html removed from the name. (Note some templates may use other fields so you would need to check the template if something looks odd with the title)

For Product Moreinformation pages you enter the information on the Products > Edit Product Info > More Info Pages section. You can specify a title to display in the browser window for the product moreinfo page.

Yes, if it says page 1 or 1 it is from a Pagination page where the products assigned to a page extend over more than one generated pages. You would need to modify the template and change the logic in the section where the <title> ... </title> is being generated.

To get page names other than page##.html or product##.html you would need to specify the page file name (Pages > Edit Page content > Advanced Info > File name), or the moreinfo page file name (Products > Edit Product Info > More Info Pages section > More Info Page File Name:

Thanks, I figured out where to add the meta title information, but still not sure how to erase the Page 1 of 1. Not sure what you mean by a "Pagination" page or where I go to change this information.

Pagination is the feature that allows you to assign a bunch of products to a page and then have ShopSite generate pages containing a certain number of the assigned products on each page. This makes it so the pages aren't really long. For example if you have 50 products that all are in the same category, but your page only looks good with 10 of them on a page then you can enable the Pagination feature and tell ShopSite to put just 10 products on a page. ShopSite will then generate 5 pages each with 10 products on it instead of 1 large page with 50 products on it. The pages will then be called Page 1 of 5, 2 of 5 etc.

You enable the Pagination feature (Pro stores only) on Pages > Edit Page Layout > Pagination at the bottom of the screen. You specify the number of products you want on a page in the box. There is also a setting under Utilities >Publish called "Maximum number of pages for Pagination". This sets a limit on the number of pages that will be generated and is basically a stop gap measure to prevent you from accidentally creating too many pages. This might happen if you assign every product in the store to a single page and accidentally set the number of products on the page to 1. That could result in hundreds of pages being generated in stead of just the 10 or 20 you were expecting.

My guess is that on the Pages > Edit Page Layout you have the pagination feature set to on but you have fewer products assigned to the page than the maximum. So ShopSite thinks Pagination is on so it tries to generate the pages and gives the first one the Page 1 of 1 that you are seeing in the window title. Try checking the Pagination value and either turn it off or make sure that you have enough products assigned to generate several pages.
