Tax is Being Calculated After Shipping

Hi,

I have a simple problem with my shop cart page, hopefully there is a simple solution.

If the customer has a shipping charge on their purchase, the tax on the purchase is being calculated after shipping is added:

Incorrect Example:

Subtotal: $10.00
Shipping: $5.00
Tax: (Calculates tax for 15.00 here)
Grand Total: x.xx

Correct Example:

SubTotal: $10.00
Tax (on subtotal only) : x.xx
Shipping: $5.00
Grand Total:

No one I know of calculates tax after shipping lol.

Is there some javascript I need to know in order to reverse this?

If you don't want the tax charged on shipping, go to Commerce Setup -> Tax and uncheck the checkbox next to 'Shipping' then click the Save Changes button. Note that unchecked is the default, so if it is currently checked, someone must have previously checked it.

BTW, different states have different rules regarding whether or not taxes are charged on shipping. Thus the existence of this option.

Yes I think I sort of know what you mean by different states:

We have 3 options:

I live outside of Alabama: 0% tax
I live in Alabama 8% tax
I live in Merchant's City 8% tax

And for shipping the only option customers have is

Ground: $6.95

Sometimes I have seen shipping go up to $7.51. Do you know why?

BTW we have another system that actually calculates everything after they make a shopsite order so it isn't super duper important.

It sounds like for tax, a better option would be the tax by zip option. You can go to Commerce Setup > Tax > select Tax By ZIP, then "configure." Check the checkbox next to Alabama, then enter in 8.00 in the rate field. When customers enter their zip code, if it is a zip in Alabama, they will automatically be charged the 8.00% tax rate. This makes it so that they don't need to manually select from the pull down menu.

For shipping, you will want to make sure you don't have handling charges turned on for products (Edit Product Info).
