Customer Shipping Account Number

Hi, first-time poster... I've been searching for awhile, and I'm alittle burnt out, so I hope I didn't miss the obvious.

My company allows the customer to provide their shipping account number, so that their UPS account or FedEx account is charged the shipping costs. Is there any way to set this up?

Right now on the Shopping Cart Screen, we have a shipping method "Prepaid (please provide Account number)". Unfortuneately, I am not able to add custom fields on the shopping cart screen. Customers have to go to the next screen (checkout screen) in order to enter in the carrier and then Account Number.
It's causing problems because customers are not filling it out correctly; or filling in the incorrect information.

What we would really like to do is to be able to have "prepaid" with a text box next to it so they can enter in the account number immediately.

We would also like to do some validation (aka if the selected Prepaid, require the account number to be entered)

If you enter part number 41.123, then click "add preforms" you will get to the shopping cart. Hopefully I have been able to explain the situation well enough.

Unfortunately, the Custom Checkout fields aren't allowed on the Cart page.

What is allowed (and you don't appear to be using) is the Ordering Instructions Text Box.

You could re-appropriate that field and use it to capture the Shipping Account Number. With a template edit and/or some fancy CSS, you could even move it relatively close to the shipping methods section.

Validating that the field is filled if the prepaid shipping method is selected is a pretty simple bit of Javascript.
