Annoying text problem since sp2

Postby Kingslayer » Fri Aug 27, 2010 8:12 am

I'm seeing a problem since I upgraded to sp2 (version 10, r1.1) a little while ago. If you take a look at my site, www.fishingfranks.com/store you'll notice that almost all the page titles are now being cut off by the header.

An example:

From the home page, on the list on the left, click on Lures. That will take you to the Lures page. You'll notice the word "Lures" is cut in half by the orange header area at the top of the page. This started happening immediately after upgrading to the ShopSite sp2 that was just released. This happens with new pages that are created, new pages that are copied, and it changed all the pages that existed prior to the service pack.

Any idea how to fix it?

It looks like this only happens on the pages that don't have a Search box. Try enabling the Search box on these pages by checking the 'Product Search Field' checkbox in these pages' Pages -> Edit Page Content menu, save the change, then Publish.

It's happening on almost all the pages. There are one or two that it's not doing it on and I don't know why.

The Lures page has a search field and the text is cut off. The Accessories page doesn't have a search field and it's also getting cut off.

I also just added the search field to the Accessories page, save and published and it didn't change anything other than putting the search field on the page. I also removed the search field from the Lures page, no change in the text. I put it back and it still didn't make a difference in the text.

All the pages that I looked at now look fine. It may be that your browser has cached older versions of the page and is not refreshing them. Try closing all your browser windows down completely and then open a new one and see if it is fixed for you. Or try a different browser.

I did notice that some of your pages, which have 3 columns of images such as Star Rods Stellar Lite Series (page296.html), have the content too wide to fit between the left navigation and the right window border unless you have your window really wide. This forces the entire content to go below the left navigation so it may not be obvious there is anything on the page but the header and navigation. It might be better to just have 2 columns of products in those cases.

The problem is the wide screen format of my computer...

I got home and everything looks fine. My home computer uses the normal 4:3 computer screen format. My work computer, where I do the web design is dual 16:9 screen resolutions.

It's still strange it didn't happen until the sp2 release. Did anything in the sp2 release affect screen resolution?

I'm not sure what changes were made to the awesome theme. I know the new features are added to all templates but generally that doesn't make font size changes and usually doesn't change the look unless the new features are enabled. We try to not change font sizes which is the only thing that I can think of that would change screen look.

The actual screen resolution is set by the shopper's browser/monitor. In general now I think most new monitors are the 16x9 format, at least that is all I see when I walk through the computer section in the stores I go to. Laptops are even going to that format although there are still some of them that are the 4x3 layout.

I looked at some of the pages from home this morning and I think they look better with the 2 columns of products instead of the 3 columns.

They look better two columns with a normal monitor but, to me, look better 3 wide on a 16x9. I'll have to look in my web stats and see what the most visiting resolution is, but even that is skewed. I live in SW Florida which is retiree central so most can't see small resolution and most aren't computer saavy enough to change their resolution. Those with wide screens are still running 800x600 most of the time...

Some interesting screen size stats at
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp
I'm not sure where they gathered their data but it shows 76% have larger than 1024x768 .

MIne is 1970 x 1080 (22" 16x9 format) (second machine 1690x1050) but I rarely have a browser window open full screen since I also have email, several terminal windows, and multiple browser windows open at the same time. So my open browser is generally in the 1200 x 1000 size.

It is a challenge to develop a website what will look good on any browser from a hand held, cell phone size to a 24 inch monitor and everything in between.
