Is there a way to truncate product descriptions

Is there a way to truncate product descriptions? I know it can be done with the search results but I'm not finding if you can do it with a regular product template.

There is no built in way to do this on store pages, only search.

You might be able to create a "CALL" routine that would just return a certain length text. Your host would have to allow such scripts on their server.

It might be possible to do something with javascript or styles depending on where the text is being displayed.
