pre-sale question re: external SMTP

Postby barnstormer » Thu Mar 18, 2010 2:13 pm

I'm familiar with ShopSite because of a couple of clients with older software versions, but don't have access to a version of SS10.

I have a new account prospect whose domain MX record is set at an external mail service provider. My question is, is it possible within the ShopSite store settings to have the site owner notification email and customer receipt sent through an external SMTP authenticated server, instead of the hosting server?

Hope that question makes sense.

As long as the SMTP server does not require user authentication it will work just fine. You can usually setup an SMTP server to accept emails from a specific IP address to avoid the possibility of using the server as a relay for any spam email that might be sent to the server.

As I stated in my inquiry (perhaps I wasn't clear), the external SMTP server would require authentication (username/password).

Are we talking about the same thing? Sorry for any confusion.

Yes it's the same thing.

If the SMTP server requires username/password then ShopSite will NOT work with it.

If you can configure the smtp server to accept emails from a specific IP then you could use it but if it requires the username and password then it won't.
