Backoffice login problems on Firefox

Postby jsherk » Tue Jan 26, 2010 7:58 am

I had an interesting issue crop up recently... For about 3 out of every 5 attempts to login to the backoffice (mydomain.com/store/ss/start.cgi), most of the page would load, but then with a few graphics left to load, Firefox would just freeze completely and lock up. I would have to shut down firefox and restart it and try again... usually 2 or 3 times before I was actually able to login.

I am using Win XP Pro, and the interesting thing was that the problem only occured on Firefox 3.5/3.6 but the problem did not occur with Internet Explorer 7. It also ONLY occurs

I contacted both my webhost and ShopSite, but nobody could seem to pinpoint any problems.

I then decided to to see if Firebug 1.5 (a Firefox extension that use) was displaying any errors, and when I Activated Firebug, the problem went away. I then tried completely Disabling the Firebug extension and the problem also went away.

So I am not sure exactly what it is about Firebug 1.5 that is causing the problem, but if you have Firebug extension ENABLED but the DE-ACTIVATED that is when the problem occurs.

Firebug extension DISABLED = no problem
Firebug extension ENABLED and ACTIVATED = no problem
Firebug extension ENABLED but DE-ACTIVATED = **PROBLEM**

So the problem appears to be with Firebug 1.5 on Firefox 3.5/3.6 on Win XP Pro machines.

Can anybody else test this scenario and see if they have the same problems with login and confirm this bug?

Thanks

I have Firefox 3.6 and Firebug 1.5.0 on Windows Vista and I don't have the problem when Firebug is enabled but not activated (this is my normal operating scenario).

Yes, that's my normal setup as well.

It's strange because ShopSite backoffice is the ONLY place I have this problem... maybe just a Windows XP problem or maybe just my computer!?!

Do you have any extensions to Firebug like FireQuery or FirePHP?

Do you have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer to try the same setup on?

No other extensions to Firebug, and no other computers... was hoping somebody in forum could reproduce it!

Maybe try removing and then re-installing Firebug? Just an idea.

I tried removing and re-installing Firebug but the problem is still there.

I posted on the Firebug maillist and they suggested I try the 1.5X version which has additional trace and debug functions not in the 1.5 version. I tried installing it, and could not reproduce the problem anymore, so it is limited to the 1.5 version!

So hopefully with the next release (1.6 and beyond) the problem will somehow be solved and not be an issue! For now I'll just leave the 1.5X version installed.

Thanks

FF bug due to mime type?

Postby MgmtSpec » Sat Jan 30, 2010 10:16 am

Hi,

I have a client reporting BO displays icons vertically

client using FF Firefox 3.5.7 - updated - Windows XP Media Center Edition - version 5.1 service pack 3 - no plugin/add-ons.

He found this text in the error console of Firefox.

Error: The stylesheet
https://shopsite1.pair.com/cgi-sys/cgiw ... office.css

was not loaded because its MIME type, "image/gif", is not "text/css".

Source File: https://www.marydsdolls.com/cgi-ss/start.cgi

Line: 0

I didn't have any issue using XP/FF 3.5.

Please have your host (Pair?) fix your ShopSite installation. The ssimages.cgi mentioned in the url has not been used for about 7-8 years now. This store must have been upgraded from an earlier version and never had the path to the images fixed.

FF mime issue

Postby MgmtSpec » Sat Jan 30, 2010 2:46 pm

Hi Jim,

Yes, this store goes back more than 10 years ;-)
Though I wonder if that is the issue? I can view it in FF 3.5 with no problem....

Until that problem is fixed many style sheet, javascript, image issues could occur. So getting that fixed should be the first thing to see if it fixes the problem.

The ssmimages.cgi was designed to display images not style sheets and javascript so who knows what it is saying the files are.

If Pair needs help fixing the problem ask them to contact ShopSite early next week.

More FF issues

Postby MgmtSpec » Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:14 am

Hi Jim,

Pair updated the settings which resolved the display at login.
A couple new issues showed up as reported by my client:

When I bring up a page to edit I get a firefox popup telling me I
am opening iframe.html and what do I want to open it with. I must
click "cancel" 8 times to get it to go away. I assume their are 8
appearances of the pop-up stacked on one another.

I cannot insert an image on the product page. On the product
page, I press the "select" button next to the image space and get
the normal pop-up screen, find and highlight the image I want and
press "select image" and nothing happens. It it does not apply
the image to the product page.. I must choose "view image" and
cut and paste the location into the iamge box. Definitely a pain,
but it works.

Solutions?

I found another plugin that causes the same problem that Firebug does (see first post in this thread) ... that plugin is FireFTP

If I have FireFTP enabled (and Frebug completely UNinstalled) then when I try to login to BO it loads the page, loads some of the graphics and then causes Firefox to freeze and lock up.

Again I only have this problem with ShopSite backoffice and on no other sites (that I have found).

Thanks

I am now having this problem EVERYTIME I try to login to the backoffice with Firefox. The only way I can login is if I Disable JavaScript in Firefox, so it could possibly be related to some JavaScript in ShopSite.

Will keep this post updated as I get more information
