Question about FTP

First let me say, and apologize, I am an idiot. I am wanting to transfer images from my computer to my shopsite site and am trying to use FTP. I can manage to get connected but have no idea where to go from there. I keep getting critical error messages when I try to upload. Could someone help me with what to do.
