Shopping Cart Error

Does anyone know how to get the zip code field on the shopping cart not display? Our cart at first doesn't have the zip code field - then when you click proceed to check-out it shows an error message that requires the buyer to enter their zip code. We offer a flat shipping rate or free shipping depending on the total puchase amount, so zip code does not effect shipping costs. I would like to either have the field eliminated all together - or have it appear on the cart before our buyer chooses to proceed to check out. We are using the "gradient" shopping cart template. Can anyone suggest what we are doing wrong??

The zip code field appears if either shipping that requires a zip code or tax by zip code is selected. To disable it, you must use both a tax and a shipping method that do not require the zip code for their calculation.
