Search recommendations

Postby RedSyntax » Mon Jan 19, 2009 10:37 am

The Search logging in the back office suggests visitors to my clients site are in fact searching for terms like "Locations" and "Hours" and getting no results. I understand that the default Shopsite search function is in fact a Products only application of the definition of Search. We were considering Google search (non branding, hosted search product) in an effort to provide site wide search. anyone have any thoughts, recommendations? The would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You must search for "products" but we created mock "products" like Hours, Locations, Return Policy, Shipping etc, that are usually linked to our FAQ page. We even created product entries for the most popular items we DON'T carry... offering suggestions from our own lines. Works VERY well after analysing search logs and polishing keywords.

The goal is to provide a meaningful response to every common search. And the price is right since we use the stock Shopsite search utility

Again, Thank you -- Would you by chance be willing to disclose how you were able to remedy the add to cart situation on the fake products?

You get rid of the add to cart buttons in the Search template. I only list a small graphic, price and name on my search returns.

I also removed the code in the template that adds the order form. We show in our search results a small product photo, product price, link to the product plus the first 200 words from the product description. Took a lot of trial and error to get the formatting looking fairly good,

This needs to be addresed

Postby RedSyntax » Mon Mar 02, 2009 9:16 am

The ability to search pages is becoming increasingly important as a culture thrown into a recession becomes more conscious of brands and price. I have evidence of people searching for brands and leaving because they did not arrive at a central location for their intended brand.

This functionality needs to improve and and implemented, this will become the deciding factor for many small business as the rescission continues and customers are increasingly, and actively seeking price and quality. .
