customer registration link

Following the instructions for configuring the customer registration, at the end it gives some code and says,

"To create a link to the Customer Registration Page copy and paste this link:"

I have tried several places and ways to copy it into my custom template, replacing the href linking, replacing the actual copy link that had said, "account"

Nothing works. Could someone please tell me how to deal with this as the instructions are not adequate.
