SMTP Error No Socket Connection

Postby royhink » Fri May 02, 2008 11:27 am

The wonderful folks at AT&T changed my smtp server to require authentication on May 1st, and I am not getting any of my order emails.

If I recall correctly, ShopSite cannot be configured to use an authenticated server, is this correct? Is there a patch or other option?

Their customer service is saying that they no longer have a server that does not require authentication.

Thanks in advance.

If you are on a non-Windows os you could switch to use the sendmail application on the server your store is hosted on.

I'm on a windoze os.

Is this normal for a service provider to NOT offer a non-authenticated smtp server? I don't see any discussion in this forum about this at all.

With all the spam that is going around many ISPs are trying to eliminate the possibility of spam being sent through their servers since it can result in them getting black listed.

Does the machine your store is hosted on have a smtp mail server that you can connect to?

Yes.

The problem is that they require authentication (user name/password).

I am under the impression that ShopSite requires a smtp server connection that does NOT require authentication. Is this correct?

I have both 8.3 and 9 versions of ShopSite running.

ShopSite does not provide a way to pass the login information to the mail server. Generally this is not an issue. If the smtp server is on the same machine that your store is located on they should be able to set it up so that it will accept mail that originates on the server itself or from an IP that is on the server itself.

Well, I can say with certainty that this has been an education in how mail servers work.

It appears that we are on our own windows server, but do not run Exchange but use 3rd party pop3 for email.

They (AT&T) no longer have an email server that does not require authentication.

So, I'm looking at either 1) buying and installing Exchange, or 2) finding some script to pass the log in info from ShopSite to my pop3 account.

Anyone with a creative solution out there?

I am looking a a sendmail emulator, but I don't know if ShopSite can be configured to call it.

Any input will be more than welcome!

I don't think that you can configure ShopSite on Windows to execute a sendmail binary instead of connecting to an SMTP host. However, I also doubt that Exchange is the only SMTP server available for Windows servers. Try google'ing for something like 'SMTP server for Windows' and see what that comes up with.
