Sub-product problem

Postby vlm » Sun Oct 07, 2007 6:03 pm

Can someone please tell me how to find all of the products to which another product has been assigned as a sub-product?

For instance: Widget A is assigned as a sub-product to 20 products in the database. When Widget A is discontinued, I need find those 20 products and replace the Widget A sub-product with a different product.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to pull up a list of all the products that have Widget A as a sub-product and then be able to power edit that sub-product field and replace it with another product of my choosing. Is there a way to do this?

The only way I know of to determine what products have a particular product as a subproduct would be to download the products data in a tab-delimited format, load it in a spreasheet, and search for the name of that product in the Subproducts column.

There is no PowerEdit for assigning subproducts, that has to be done on a product-by-product basis. You can assign the new product as a subproduct of all the products that the old product was a subproduct of by doing a search and replace in the tab-delimited file in the Subproducts column and then re-uploading the modified file, just not that this field is additive only, i.e. it will add all of the products listed in the Subproducts column as subproducts if they are not already, however it will not remove Subproducts that are not listed in your upload file. If you actually delete the old product from ShopSite, though, it will be removed as a subproduct from all other products.

Thanks for the reply.

I've discovered that I can't use the "assign subproducts" feature in ShopSite because it doesn't list the SKU. It only lists the name of the item. We have products with identical names from different vendors. We use the SKU to tell them apart. Is there anyway to make ShopSite display both the SKU and the name on the product list?

My back-up plan was to build an external database with FileMaker Pro for the purpose of assigning sub-products. This would be so much better than what ShopSite has because I could see the images of the sub-products when I assign them.

But it sounds like that won't work either. I just did a test import, changing the sub-products and it just added them instead of replacing what was there, as you said it would do.

Do you know of any way to over-write the sub-products through an upload?
