Big Problems with Gift Certificates

Postby Steve Russell » Thu Aug 09, 2007 6:58 pm

Hello to the group,

We recently tried to install gift certificates for our website and ran into several problems. We were able to set up the certificates, but when we tested them, we found the following:

1.) The same gift certificate number and pin could be used more than once. We verified this by buying a certificate and then using the same certificate several times. I thought this was what the number and pin was for, to prevent multiple uses of the same certificate?

2.) We purchased a $40.00 gift certificate and used it to buy a $48.00 item. The sale went through and showed up as a completed sale. There was no screen asking how I wanted to pay for the $8.00 difference between the certificate value and the total cost of the item.

Is there something we missed here? When you purchase or redeem a gift certificate for an item that costs more than the face value of the certificate, how is the balance of the cost handled?

Needless to say, we removed the gift certificate option from our website until we can find out what we need to do to get it working correctly. Any ideas on what happened? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I don't remember hearing about these particular problems, but you are using a relatively old version of ShopSite, v7.1.4.1. V7.1x was the first version that included the Gift Certificate feature, so newer versions would be more likely to have additional refinements and kinks worked out. The current version is v8.3. If you would like to try Gift Certificates in the current version before making the upgrade request through your ShopSite reseller/hosting provider, you can sign up for a free demo here:

Remember to get a Pro demo, since the Gift Certificate feature is not included in the other product levels.
