Great topic.
When I shop online, the word "registration" is a huge turn off thanks to all those early sites (OSCommerce especially) that mandated a long registration process. There were even a few sites that required registration prior to entering the "store." Wow!
We recently added OPTIONAL registration because a few shoppers demanded it. We deal with repeat business customers who benefit from it.
We lean over backwards to tell shoppers that registration is purely voluntary.
I think it's possible that any mention of registration REDUCES sales. Registration probably increases repeat commercial business while decreasing one-shot impulse purchases. Therefore whether to even mention it should depend on what you're selling.
