html order notification emails to merchant only?

is there a way for shopsite to send HTML emails to the merchant when an
order is placed?

I'm used to little thumbnails of the products showing up in the order
notification email. Helps me make sure I pack the order right

No, currently only the text-based emails are sent to the merchant, HTML
emailed (defined in the shopping cart template) can be sent to the
shopper (see the setting in Commerce Setup -> Order System -> Thank You).

order API?

Yes and yes.

The ShopSite Pro Order API feature can pass to a custom program all of
the order information, and your custom program can then do whatever it
wants with it, including making custom email receipts.
