Digital product downloads and incomplete payments

I have a store http://www.castlewellgames.com/index.html hosted at Lexiconn.

Someone made an order, using PayPal, and ShopSite says this:

"CAUTION: Payment status is not "Completed".*PAYPALEXPRESS* TRANSACTIONID:67M94837CN922473D TRANSACTIONTYPE:expresscheckout PAYMENTTYPE:instant ORDERTIME:2016-02-10T01:27:37Z AMT:79.92 PAYMENTSTATUS:Pending PENDINGREASON:unilateral"

FINE. I assume this means they used their PayPal account, it did not have sufficient funds, so PayPal is using their backup funding source and will send me the money in a few days. No worries there.

The question is, when they got the email confirmation, were they allowed to download the games even though payment is not complete?

If you included the download link in the email receipt, then yes they would have access to the download. The payment was processed by PayPal it is just on hold for some reason. You should check your PayPal account and find out why it didn't complete.

According to PayPal's IPN documentation:
https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/ipn/integration-guide/IPNandPDTVariables/
unilateral: The payment is pending because it was made to an email address that is not yet registered or confirmed.


So this indicates that you are using the default 'Accelerated Boarding' Authorization Method for PayPal Express (or at least you were when the payment was made), and the 'Merchant E-mail Address' in your PayPal Express settings isn't one that PayPal recognizes as belonging to a PayPal account. So the funds are 'pending' waiting for you to claim that email address in your PayPal account.

I see what happened.

I did not configure Commerce Setup > Payment Setup >> PayPal Express Checkout >> PayPal Express

as I misunderstood the comments that said:
"If you wish to use PayPal Payments Pro or another PayPal gateway check Credit Cards box to the right."

so I only configured Commerce Setup > Payment Setup >> Credit Cards >> PayPal Payments Pro >> Configure
