Shipping - odd shapes and weights

We have a site where we currently configure shipping after the order has been placed. This has become very cumbersome, and very time consuming.

Example: We sell tools that are 60" x 6" x 3", 2# - we have about 20 that can ship together. We also sell a tool that's 14" x" 14", 7# that needs a separate box than the long tools. If someone bought some or one of each items, they would need to ship separately or the 14" tool would bend and damage the 60" tools.

We are looking for a way to configure shipping that is fair to our customers (as we are now... by not over charging), yet make it automated.

Any advice?

For the 14" tool that ships separately you can specify in ShopSite that the "Product is shipped singly using the following package size" and then specify the size. This information would then be sent to whatever real-time shipper you have configured.
