JPEG image not displaying in the store

Postby TheDigitalMan » Tue Nov 28, 2006 5:41 pm

I uploaded a jpeg via FTP. I reset the image attributes. The image does not display in the store. It shows the name of the image with a red x. I went back to images and deleted the image from the directory. I uploaded it using the shopsite controls. I then chose to VIEW the image. It still won't display. Even in the images area of shopsite. It loads and displays fine in Photoshop. Is there a bug here? Or is there something I am not doing right?

Something you aren't doing right. ;-)

The image and the directory it is in must have read and write permissions for the webserver which is usually a different user than the ftp user. You can take ShopSite entirely out of the picture by trying to view the image by going to http://<yourdomainname>/media/<imagename>.jpg in your browser. If you can't see it then you definitely have a permissions problem since that would not involve ShopSite in any way. When you uploaded the image by ftp you may have created a file that couldn't be viewed or deleted from the ShopSite interface. Try uploading a different image using the ShopSite Image upload functionality and see if you can view that image.

I am not sure it is a permission problem. Of course I'll be the first to admit I may be doing something wrong. :-)

I fiddled around a bit and deleted the "SplashPage.jpg" from my StoreFront subdirectory. I then re-uploaded it using Shopsite. It still didn't display either in Shopsite or by putting in the URL as you suggested. I then decided that perhaps I should upload it under a different name since the original name might be corrupted somehow (Maybe not actually deleted etc.). I did this and the same problems occurred. I am working in INTERNET EXPLORER with the shopsite software. But I browse this forum using SAFARI. When I came back to Safari to write this note I thought what the heck and put the URL into the Safari address window. It immediately loaded the JPEG no problem. So it must be an EXPLORER issue. I guess thats not your problem but if anyone knows what I need to do to fix it I would appreciate a heads up.

Perhaps I should develop in SAFARI? Does it really matter?

Try viewing the image in Firefox and see if it works. Firefox will often tell you what the problem is with an image such as RGB/CMYK issues, etc... There are some jpg formats that do not render on the web correctly, especially with IE.

Thanks Rob,

I downloaded Firefox 2.0 for the MAC OSX and loaded it. Put the address to the image in the address window and hit enter. It replied with the message:

The image "http://www...." cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

So how do I determine what the errors are?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure how you'd determine this. Maybe it got uploaded as ascii instead of binary (raw). Maybe you set the color scheme to CMYK JPG instead of RGB JPG, as CMYK has display issues with browsers I believe.
