Setting shipping methods for each SKU

Postby astroblasto » Mon Oct 16, 2006 5:11 am

I've been doing a lot of reading about ShopSite, but I can't seem to find any mention of what it would take to allow each item to have their own shipment drop-down. For example, let's say you have one product that can be sent only via UPS, but another only by DHL because they are sold by different vendors. Is a shopping cart with both

A) Impossible
B) Insanely hard
C) Doable with some scripting and know-how

Thanks!

You could create a custom shipping module that would calculate the rate for each item independently but in the shopping cart there can only be one pulldown with the total shipping cost displayed. This pulldown could display options like Air, Second Day, Ground etc but the cost for each of those would be the combined shipping cost for each product and its respective shipping companies price, I.E. UPS Air rate for one product and DHL Air rate for another product combined or the combined UPS & DHL rates for Second Day or Ground.

Thank you for quickly answering my question and providing an excellent solution to the problem. But so I can say I left no stone unturned, would this work too?

The customer can customize products by adding engravings or choosing colors etc. If I make "shipping method" one of those customizable parts of a product, can we pass their selection to the custom shipping module? That way the customer can give each product a different shipping method, and the shipping module can compute the shopping cart total based on that. Would this work, or is there a roadblock ahead that I'm not forseeing?

Product order options are passed to the shipping api so your custom shipping module could probably use that as a way of determining the shipping cost. Specs for shipping API are found here
