Digital Download Error, help configure?

How do you configure the digital download set up properly to direct customers to a URL that is not on my own server? In the backend of my Shopsite 8.1.2 Pro, I have the Product Type: set to "download" and I have the Product Download Location radio button selected and I have entered the URL... http://russellperformance.com/new/dl/06cat.pdf

Once customer orders, they flow to the thank you screen (or receives their email) and once they click on the supplied file download link they get a message back that says...
Error opening file: http://russellperformance.com/new/dl/06cat.pdf

I am trying to direct customers to the hosting website for the PDF file as opposed to hosting the file myself due to bandwidth usage reasons.

All digital download files must reside in the ShopSite data directory on the server where ShopSite is running. They cannot be on another server. So that is probably why it isn't working for you.
